Imagine a football match where each player is encased in a large, transparent inflatable bubble: you run, you shoot... and most importantly, you bounce off each other in every direction! Bubble football (also known as bumper ball) has become one of the most requested activities for birthdays, stag/hen parties, celebrations, and team-building events. Here is the complete guide: game rules, equipment, bubble sizes, how to organize a match or a tournament, and safety instructions.
Bubble football is a team game derived from football, in which each participant wears an inflatable bubble (or bumper ball) that encases the upper body and head, leaving the legs free to run and kick the ball. The goal? To score goals... while bumping into each other in spectacular collisions, fully cushioned by the air in the bubbles. The result: bouncing impacts, harmless falls, and continuous laughter.
It's one of the stars of our sports games section, alongside snookball, foot darts, and inflatable basketball. Find the equipment in the inflatable football & bubble football collection.
Bubble football is most often played in teams of 3 to 5 players, in short rounds. The basic rules are simple:
To play, you need bubbles adapted to the players' size, a ball, a defined field (two goals or cones), and a blower to quickly inflate them. The correct bubble diameter is essential for comfort and safety:
| Profile | Approximate Diameter | Usage |
|---|---|---|
| Child | ~1.2 m | Birthdays, fetes |
| Teenager | ~1.5 m | Parties, teen clubs |
| Adult | ~1.5 to 1.8 m | Stag/Hen parties, team building |
An electric blower or pump allows you to prepare all the bubbles in a few minutes—essential when the group is large.
Mark out a flat and soft field (preferably grass) with two goals or cones. Form balanced teams, plan a warm-up, play short rounds with player rotation, then establish a ranking for a final. For a large event, combine bubble football with other activities like an inflatable obstacle course or a mechanical bull (see our mechanical bull guide).
As with most inflatable attractions, the choice depends on the frequency of use. For a single event, renting a set of bubbles is sufficient. If you are an animation professional, a club, a municipality, or a rental company, buying a set of bubbles quickly pays for itself and gives you autonomy. See the Bubble Football collectionWith appropriately sized bubbles (around 1.2 m for children), bubble football can be played from a young age under supervision, by adjusting the duration and intensity of the rounds. For children, prioritize smaller teams, a soft surface, and an adult to referee and remind them of safety instructions.
It depends on the format. For a friendly match, 6 to 10 bubbles allow for two teams with rotations. For a tournament or a large event, plan for more bubbles and a powerful blower to inflate them quickly and alternate participants.
Grass is ideal: soft, it cushions falls. Avoid concrete and hard surfaces. The field must be flat, clear of all obstacles and sharp objects. It can also be played indoors on a suitable floor, observing a safety zone around the playing area.
Collisions are cushioned by the air in the bubbles, making the game very safe when the rules are followed: warm-up, soft surface, no charging a player who is down or from behind, removal of objects and glasses, and an attentive referee. Short rounds and hydration prevent excessive fatigue.
Rounds are deliberately short, generally 4 to 6 minutes, because the effort in the bubble is intense. Several rounds are played with player rotation, allowing everyone to rest and enjoy an activity that can last one to two hours depending on the group.
Depending on the models and providers, it is sometimes possible to add team colors, bibs, or an event theme. For a complete party, combine bubble football with other inflatable sports games and a relaxation area for spectators.
